Penumbra uses similar themes to Umbra, but with a very different mindset: The goal was to create a track that started as mellow and consonant as it could, and over the course of the piece deteriorate into atonal metal heaviness.
For the record: Umbra and Penumbra aren't really two components of the same long track, instead think of them as two different representations of similar themes; "sister songs" if you like.
Penumbra is an artistic success if you don't notice that you've just moved from lulling melodies to brutal dissonance in the space of five-odd minutes.

Quandary was a band that existed from 2006-2011, consisting of guitarist Sam Vallen, drummer Geoff Irish, keyboardist Gareth Hogan, and bassist Dave Couper. Quandary saw active gigging bands with no recorded works, and decided to do the opposite, releasing an album before a single performance. The third Sanctuary album is also the best of the trilogy. This one dares even more to expand the Oldfieldian style in new and exciting directions. It may be sacrilege to suggest it, but if this *were* a genuine Oldfield album, many might say it was one of his best, too. It's true that Rob Reed is standing on the shoulders of a giant, but he is a giant talent in his own right. Often the music brings tears to the eyes, as if it were the soundtrack to the climax of a hard-won cinematic story.

Of the two albums I own of Matt, this is my favourite. Song structures are interesting and Matt employs a variety of guitar-playing techniques to good effect. Expressive stuff, & good background music. If I have any quibbles at all, it’s that I find the drumming a bit annoying, at times. Thanks, Matt! 7.5/10.
