about

Welcome!
This album represents 4 years of grueling hard work. Actually, a lot of it was written while we were drunk or otherwise drinking, between planning cruel practical jokes and watching Family Guy.
It was recorded in people's bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms, and it was mixed in a living room. Anyway we're really proud of it and we want you to hear it now.

The title "Ready to Fail" can be interpreted any way you like. It's named after the title track, which is a short statement on artistic integrity. Many of the album's lyrics explore similar themes of failure and self-destruction. Some songs share similar musical threads as well, but this is not a concept album. As an album title it's intended as a cynical, ironic statement about our ambitions.

Enclosed in this document you should find some odd-time signatures, some solos, some more irony, long songs, very long songs, a few shorter ones, notes that only dogs can hear, and a few quintuplets.
I trust this will be to your satisfaction.

Enjoy

about

Quandary Brisbane, Australia

Quandary was a band that existed from 2006-2011, consisting of guitarist Sam Vallen, drummer Geoff Irish, keyboardist Gareth Hogan, and bassist Dave Couper. Quandary saw active gigging bands with no recorded works, and decided to do the opposite, releasing an album before a single performance. A song approaching 30 minutes was in progress, but never completed - Quandary dissolved in October 2011. ... more

Track Name: Out of Time
Lyrics: Sam Vallen

It seems so obvious
the way we know, through life we're taught
It's virtuous to blindly follow
A wave of logic floods upon the still benighted
Strives to offer a bright new meaning
To a life worth living
Without inhibition or mistrust in reason

Far too late my life goes by
Misunderstanding truths I can't deny
And I'm out of time to understand
All at once I realise life's depleting at a rate I can't define
But with hindsight it all seems so easy
So through this revelation
My years of reflection are lost in dissension
How can I emancipate my world from something so ingrained
Embedded in the back of my mind?
I'm out of time

To question everything
And depend on one thing tangible: my mind
I've seen the light, it proves we're close to impossible
We are the miracle!

Far too late my life goes by
Misunderstanding truths I can't deny
And I'm out of time to understand
All at once I realise life's depleting at a rate I can't define
Have I wasted my time?
It seems my inspiration's a product of living
That's years in the making
How can I negate the face of reason, begging me to question
Praying for a single statement - why?
I'm out of time
Track Name: Illusion Of Progress
Lyrics: Gareth Hogan

Arbitrary changes
Meaningless phrases
Deliberate approach to joins and links
Endless struggle to become distinct
Referential, non-sequential
Analysing, not compromising
Verbose nostalgic tour-de-force
This sinking ship has run it's humble course

Waiting for chance to arrive
Out of social insecurity, a need to survive
If escaping the wake, is only a way for
Weeding the twists in your mind

Feeding back endlessly into yourself
Turn the illusion into an art unto itself
I'm only safe until your work is done
You've no idea what you have just begun
You can spread the lies, you've opened up your eyes
Out with the old, in with the brand new disguise
You think you've got it all figured out
But the light in your life you just can't live without

In your eyes, I fell
Into the static process
Into the lines of progress
Carving in my name
Enter a new division
Ignorance and seclusion
It's the same old revolution
It's just an illusion

I know it's safe, but inside
These obsessive insecurities found home to reside
If escaping the wake, is only a way for
Weeding the twists in your mind
'Cause forcing it open could leave you so blind

Track Name: Ready To Fail
Lyrics: Gareth Hogan + Sam Vallen

My name - a symbol of memory presides over my life
I'm ready to leave integrity behind
My name - a symbol of memory presides over my life
It's all I'm holding onto
Holding on, but for how long?

Believing, achieving
Wasted my moment
So I'm leaving, my light behind
Losing my mind tonight
Oh I've been dissolving, fading decay
Help me, I'm spiraling away
It's okay
Track Name: Waiting For Change
Lyrics: Sam Vallen

Still, as he watches them
Trying to pretend
That he can't feel their hate
For him it's just too much to take
So he waits

Still, staring at the wall
Not understanding at all
Why two would act this way
For love
Is this the price that we pay?

Dreams fade away
Even hope fails to stay

And so he waits, watching his life go by
From crying days to sleepless nights
He's pleading
He's seeing nothing different

Still, as he watches them
Not a single friend
In his cold world shut away
Is there more to life than living afraid?

Still, as he watches them
Trying to pretend
That he can't feel their hate
There's only so much he can take

Dreams fade away
It all just stays the same

And so he waits, watching his life go by
From crying days to sleepless nights
Resentment
He was always forgotten

Forget me

How could you not know that I was right beside you?
Ready and willing always
I know it's hard to find
But you know it's time
To leave them all behind

Dreams fade away
Even hope fails to stay

And so he waits, watching his life go by
From crying days to sleepless nights
He's pleading, he's seeing nothing new
Watching his life go by
From crying days to sleepless nights
He's pleading
He's waiting for change

Track Name: Disconnect
Lyrics: Gareth Hogan

Days and nights we used to be
So close, as far as I could see
I threw away the life inside
Just to have someone to stand beside
No longer priority
It fell away so easily
To think, if you only knew
How long I've been living in the shadow of you

All I ever wanted was to love, not to pretend
I would have done anything
All of our lives, working towards the end
How did it come to this?
I can't compete with manipulation
I can't concede to this celebration
I can only bite my tongue for so long
No longer priority
You gave up so easily
It's your choice, but I hope you knew
That I never gave up on you

Days and nights we've always been
Like strangers not knowing where to begin
Swimming through another day
Learning to live so many miles away
And so we live, either side of a bridge
I wonder what happened to you
When I slowed to a halt and you flew right by

All I ever wanted, was for you to make amends
I would have waited forever
All of our lives, working towards the ends
How did it come to this?
For your empathy I'll always pray
So you can see all the things that you threw away
'Cause I'd call but you wouldn't hear me
Yeah I'd build a bridge but I can't bring you near me

Days and nights we'll always be
Far apart and living free
Coming together now and then
But not really knowing where to start again
I can only hope, for you
To feel the emptiness, to see the signs
I'll be waiting, this side of the bridge
I'll watch you leave this life behind
Track Name: Cloud Shapes
[Instrumental]
Track Name: Stepping Stones
Lyrics: Gareth Hogan

Waves of endless sparks
Surround her form
Waited so long
To escape from warmth
Until I saw your eyes
Just not getting through
So hopelessly detached
I've given up on you

All fall away
I'm too used to letting you down by now
It's too late to let me fly
I'm not afraid to let it pass me by
And in my own respite
I've fallen short again
It all became too much in the end

Not much more in size
And not much more to take
Then the first splits into two
'Till we're packed too close to move
Pieces fall back into place
And fall back out of line
Like it's nothing, just an empty shell
It's a void we can't escape, and hell
It's not like anything has changed
There's no ups or downs, no reasons why
No boundaries, there's enough just in front of me
To weigh me down
It's a mystery, why they persist
Without any ambitions, but to exist
It's enough to be

All fall away
I'm too used to letting you down by now
It's too late to let me fly
I'm not afraid to let it pass me by
And in my own respite
I've wasted another year
It all just flew
While you were here

Morning strikes the hall
Casts shadows across the filthy wall
'till the sun hits the broken sticks
And crawls towards the shattered stall
Broken down inside
Know he hasn't really tried
But not for even knowing why
He writes:
"The road will find me,
And pass virtues from another place;
Will wake me up and tell me what to chase"

I've arrived!
At the edge of a knife
The ice melts
And the pictures come back to life
It's like I designed it myself
Indifferent
To all else

Being capable but just not
Willing to ask the question
I must be blind
It's an easier confession
But it's easier to get on my knees
Than to confess
To go
Than to be blessed

Believe in
Achieve in
Receive it
Or Leave it behind
'Cause we're not defined by
The choices that they made
Decisions
From visions
That turned out to be lies
So open your eyes
Say your goodbyes

Oh, I've been dreaming, force-feeding these lies
Learning to cut them back down to size
So I can fit them between
My scars and my dreams
Where the promise of failure is not what it seemed to be

All fall away
I'm too used to letting you down by now
And all I want to say
Is I'm not going to let you fail today

And in my long respite
I saw where I went wrong
It all came into view
Like it was there all along
All fall away
